But then I found THE dress at my local Goodwill. Even on the rack, I knew it was shapeless and 80s, but I absolutely loved the pattern. (I'm obsessed with polka dots. It's probably unhealthy how much I am.) This pattern was like a quasi-dot, but it was just great, and I loved the color. (I've been wanting a red dress forever.)
I may look happy on the outside, but what I was really thinking was...
PLEASE ignore my foot tan! |
But, I got to work. (Mind you, this project took quite awhile because I would do one thing, then leave it for a few days. And then I changed my mind about what I wanted to do. More on that later.)
You probably couldn't tell from the pics, but there were "pockets"...ew.
Were being the operative word.
So then I snipped...a lot.
I was originally just going to make it into a strapless and cut off some length, but then I thought, You can never have too many one-shoulder dresses. (I, in fact, had exactly zero!) So guess what my dress became?
It doesn't exactly fit, but in my own defense, I:
A) Don't own a dress form,
B) Don't own a sewing machine, and
C) Don't know how to use one anyway!
That's right folks, this was a hand-sewn refash!
I accessorized a little...

Notice anything about the front? Or, better yet: notice anything about the back?
The front is now the back! How fun!
Happy Refashioning!

I just found your blog from Jillian at Refashionista! This looks great! I, too, am a budding refashionista, so it's nice to see others out there trying some of the same things! I've never attempted a one-shoulder, but I might have to try now! Thanks for the inspiration!

The one-shoulder was definitely a challenge. Since I don't have a dress form, I had to pin it while it was on me, and carefully take it off. It shifted a little because of this, so the waist isn't exactly straight across.
DeleteI wish you luck on your one-shoulder though! Let me know how it goes!
Ah, I don't have a dress form either! I feel your pain. I'm trying to save up some money to get a nice one. I'm looking forward to more of your refashions!
DeleteThank you all for your kind words! :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! And great job with the hand sewing. I avoid hand sewing as much as possible. Get a machine. Really. $150-200 will get you a decent basic machine (or look on craig's list). There are GREAT online resources for learning to sew with one. You can usually find local classes or a local 'pro' to teach you. You will be hooked and amazed at how much easier refashioning will be. Happy Sewing!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing refash! Love it! I've sewn for many years and still have trouble doing this. Beautiful
ReplyDeleteNice job! Nice to see someone else attempting to refashion with no dress form and hand sewing! Can't wait to see what else you do!
